Exercise comes in many forms. Some people like lifting weights while others prefer to take a dance class a few times a week. Still some joint sports teams because they know that having others dependent on them will create the social pressure to stay committed and attending practice consistently. Group activities have a tendency to create positive social pressures.
It takes a certain amount of discipline to pick a solo sport and to stay with it consistently enough to create health gains. Every new year there are people who join gyms with a brand new searing fervor and conviction - one whose authenticity no onlooker would dare doubt. As a matter of fact the conviction runs so deep that people put pen to paper and register for expensive gym memberships and buy expensive new exercise gear and equipment as if to say to themselves that they’ve committed by doing these things so there is no turning back. Every single year, gyms bank on this type of thinking and are able to lie in wait through advertising around new years to profit from this phenomenon.
Exercises should be chosen based on age. There are different types of people meaning that some people just prefer more of a challenge. Not only do such people prefer more of a challenge they might actually also have a higher threshold for discomfort. Exercising can be for sport or it can be for physical fitness. If you are selecting exercise strictly for physical fitness then it is best to choose something more low key that will not leave you in ongoing danger of injury. As a person ages the ability for the body to bounce back in a short amount of time diminishes. For this reason, milder forms of exercise would be a more judicious choice for the older person. Younger people can be more daring and take risks with sports like mountain climbing, for example.
The world of exercise doesn’t always include “suiting up” and going to the gym or any outdoor area where the exercise will be done. There are very passive forms of fitness like walking the stairs instead of taking an elevator or an escalator, then there is the all new standing desk.
A standing desk is great because we all spend so much time at our desks and sitting that it makes the desk a fantastic place to take advantage of the amount of time spent there. Some people have a low scale treadmill that they walk on while working at their standing desk; this gives the exerciser the opportunity to get very low intensity cardiovascular activity going instead of sitting for at least 8 hours doing nothing physical. With more people becoming aware of such things the prices on these types of rigs should be coming down soon. Getting a personal trainer for motivation is probably one of the best moves to make. As mentioned earlier, the new years push is something that fizzles out after a while but this is not because the interested parties were being insincere, it’s because motivation wears thin in the absence of an enforcer. Your personal trainer becomes your enforcer so that you don’t slouch. It is important to find a personal trainer who you are comfortable with but who is tough enough to make you want to do what needs to be done.
Keeping the habit for a lifetime is what makes the difference between a passing fancy and a deep appreciation for the concept of ongoing maintenance for your body. Most people don’t think of their bodies as something that they have to inspect and make efforts to keep in fine working condition. They simply take their bodies - therefore their health - for granted and they continue plugging away doing all sorts of damage either via negligence or purposefully. It is sometimes very difficult or impossible to come back from the damage inflicted on the body by years of consistent punishment either by way of harmful foods, or by way of inactivity.
Increasing the number of people who exercise is a big goal that the entire country must embrace. The more people look after their health the lower the demand will be that is placed on the state in terms of costs to healthcare. It’s a proactive approach to reducing the incidences of many easily preventable ailments. Unfortunately it is impossible for the government to become the defacto personal trainer for every citizen of the United States but maybe in a sense that is what needs to be done. Healthier people would also have more positive personalities and outlooks. People would feel better about themselves and this could change the national character.
